How far can ready mixed concrete travel?

The distance that ready-mixed concrete can travel largely depends on various factors, including the transportation method, environmental conditions, mix design, and desired workability time. Here are some considerations regarding the distance that ready-mixed concrete can effectively travel:

  1. Transportation method: Ready-mixed concrete is typically transported to construction sites using trucks equipped with rotating drums. These trucks are designed to mix and agitate the concrete during transit, helping to maintain its workability. The distance ready-mixed concrete can travel is influenced by the capacity of the truck, the condition of the roads, and the efficiency of the mixing and agitating mechanisms.
  2. Workability time: Ready-mixed concrete has a limited workability time, commonly referred to as the “slump life” or “workability window.” This is the time during which the concrete remains fluid and workable after it is mixed. The workability time depends on factors such as ambient temperature, mix design, and the use of chemical admixtures. The concrete needs to be placed and finished within this time frame to achieve the desired quality.
  3. Setting time: Ready-mixed concrete undergoes a setting process, transitioning from a fluid state to a solid state. The setting time varies based on factors like the type of cement used, mix design, and ambient conditions. Concrete must be placed and finished before it sets to ensure proper consolidation and bonding.
  4. Environmental conditions: Extreme environmental conditions can affect the workability and setting of ready-mixed concrete. High temperatures can accelerate the setting process and reduce workability, while cold temperatures can slow down the setting and reduce early strength development. Adverse weather conditions, such as heavy rain or freezing conditions, may limit the distance that concrete can travel safely and maintain its desired properties.
  5. Retarders and accelerators: The addition of chemical admixtures, such as retarders or accelerators, can alter the setting and workability characteristics of ready-mixed concrete. Retarders can extend the workability time, allowing for longer transportation distances, while accelerators can speed up the setting time, requiring shorter transportation distances. In general, ready-mixed concrete is transported within a reasonable distance from the batching plant to the construction site to ensure that it can be placed and finished within the desired timeframe.

The specific distance that ready-mixed concrete can travel depends on the factors mentioned above, please just contact our sales office on 01209 820909 or sales@mitchellconcrete.co.uk if you require any additional advice.
